The Copan Cyclone is a cutting-edge laboratory automation system designed to streamline and automate sample processing in food, infant formula, cosmetic and service microbiology labs. Developed by Copan Italia, the Cyclone has transformed the way samples are processed, revolutionizing the food microbiology industry.
The cyclone is a fully automated system that performs classic microbiology techniques such as sample diluting, pour plating, spiral plating and spread plating of any liquefied sample with a high degree of precision and reproducibility, only possible with automation. The Cyclone is ideal for laboratories looking to improve their accuracy, reproducibility, and productivity while also reducing operational costs.
Cyclone has the unparalleled flexibility to process a wide range of sample types. The system’s easy-to-use interface allows for detailed protocol customisation and gives the operator complete control over the testing process. The cyclone automates many aspects of sample processing, so laboratory analysts can be deployed to higher-level tasks that require their expertise.

Application
The operation of the workstation is extremely simple: Samples are loaded onto a fully customisable turntable that allows for the dilution and processing of any bottom-labelled container. With a simple press of a button, the system reads the sample label using smart scan technology and automatically communicates with the lab information system to identify the sample, determine protocol settings, and record every step of the sample journey for complete traceability. If dilutions are required, the cyclone automatically dilutes the sample, using liquid sensing pipette tips, ensuring accurate inoculum delivery.
Simultaneously, the cyclone automatically labels an empty plate from the carousel and sends the plate to the pipetting platform. If the pour plate option is selected, the instrument takes a precise sample aliquot and dispenses it into the empty plate and adds molten agar. After the sample and agar are dispensed, the plate is lifted into the orbital mixer and homogenised.
If a second layer of agar is required, the cyclone lowers the plate into a cooling chamber, allowing the agar to set before a second layer is applied. Once the plate has been processed, the cyclone sends the plated sample to the output carousel where a technician can collect the plate for incubation.
General maintenance and cleaning of the Cyclone is extremely easy as its chamber is a HEPA-filtered workspace, that continuously circulates clean air, protecting sample integrity. Built-in UV lights and easy-to-clean surfaces, also ensure proper environmental hygiene.
Are you using many different types of Agar for your testing? The cyclone’s open platform utilises a multimedia module to switch between up to seven different agars seamlessly, or it can connect to a third-party media preparator.
