Solutions Without Compromise

Customer Challenge

A long-standing pharmaceutical manufacturing customer needed to replace several biological safety cabinets in 2022. The task quickly revealed major logistical barriers:

  • Existing cabinets were installed between 2007–2009.
  • The building had aged, leaving extremely limited access routes.
  • Units were located in high-grade production zones, MSAT and QC areas.
  • Traditional replacement options required:
    – Removing walls or windows
    – Using a crane for manoeuvring
    – Extensive cleanroom remediation afterward

This approach would have been costly, disruptive, time-consuming, and risked compromising cleanroom integrity.

Our Approach

Despite the challenges, MSC believed a better solution was possible. Working with our manufacturing partner, Faster srl, we explored an alternative delivery strategy involving:

  • Precision route planning.
  • Flat-packing and in-situ assembly of selected cabinets
  • Delivering others fully assembled when access allowed

However, we needed to demonstrate that this solution would genuinely work before committing to delivery.

Innovation in Action

To give the customer full confidence, our Deputy Clean Air Service Manager, Lee, developed a creative and practical solution:

  • Built a custom adjustable wheeled rig using PVC plumbing pipes in his home workshop.
  • Designed the rig to match the exact dimensions of the largest cabinet.
  • Used it to simulate the entire delivery route through corridors, corners, and cleanroom access points

This model allowed us to physically simulate the full delivery path through the customer’s building and into the clean rooms, turning theory into visible, testable proof.

Outcome

The result? Confidence and significant cost savings from the customer, successful delivery without structural work and preservation of cleanroom conditions. Our engineers assembled several more complex cabinets on site, passing all validation and QC tests with flying colours.

This project showcased not just our technical expertise, but also our commitment to creative thinking, teamwork and above all, making things work for the customer.
